Heather Shannon has followed a meandering and adventurous path to get to where she could serve as a charge nurse of a 28 bed ER in a mobile field hospital as part of a federal disaster medical assistance team in Puerto Rico after hurricanes Irma and Maria. She started her journey as an officer in the US Army and then was recruited into corporate America as a logistics supervisor. Neither spoke to her true calling so after a master’s degree in organizational leadership; she spent seven years following her passion traveling the Western Hemisphere working as a mountain guide, outdoor educator, wilderness medicine instructor, and ski patroller all the while living out of a pickup truck. Things came together during this time, and while on the side of a mountain doing CPR, she knew nursing was her path. She got her RN license, paramedic license, a master’s degree in critical care/trauma nursing and cut her teeth in the trauma surgical ICU at San Francisco General Hospital. Fast forward 10 years and now she works full time in Northern California as a flight nurse on a helicopter.
Heather also trains for ultra-endurance races, running the trails with her dogs or doing yard work on her property in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Her recent noteworthy races include Survival Run Canada, finishes at Broken Arrow Skyrace 52K, TPK2, and a podium finish (first place woman) at TPK Endurance in 2016.
